Sparrowhawk, before the kill!!

Nice Sparrowhawk on my Gwithian Patch yesterday. (see picture) However, I wasn’t overly impressed to see it take a stunning male Wheatear shortly after this photo was taken. The Wheatear had escaped its first attack and was hiding in a small patch of bramble below the Sprawk. Unfortunately it then tried to make a break for it only to fall prey to the waiting killer!

Apart from that it was a very nice walk. Over 20 Sand Martins and a couple of Swallows were over the main pond and at least 6 Wheatears were present. Three Chiffchaffs along the Red River but no sign of any Willow Warblers. 😦

Bird of the day was a cracking spring Ruff. It fed amongst the gulls on the spit at the main island but was just too far away for any decent photos. A Sandwich Tern offshore was a year tick. March wasn’t too bad for new species on the Patchwork challenge with Barn Owl, Turnstone, Snipe, Pheasant, Wheatear and an early Whimbrel added. So far in April I’ve added 6 further species, all mentioned above.  So not bad really, 74 species to date! only need another 16 species to equal last years total!!

As for Hayle, I  might give that up as a bad job!! No new species added due to lack of coverage!
